The Effect of Some Antiseptics on Selected Nosocomial Fungi isolated from Al- Yarmouk Hospital

Abstract

Abstract: Objective: The present study performed to evaluate the effect of available antiseptics on selected nosocomial Fungi.Materials & Methods:-18 nosocomial fungi were isolated from Internal Medicine Wards at Al -Yarmouk Teaching Hospital during the period: - 1/11/1998 to 31/7/1999, grown on sabouraud dextrose media. Various mycological media were used to complete diagnosis (potato-dextrose agar, corn meal agar, Sabouraud glucose agar).-Samples were collected from patients staying more than 2-days in internal medicine wards especially suffering, from: diabetes, heart troubles, tuberculosis, anemia, respiratory failure, fever of unknown origin hepatitis, lymphopenia, stomach ulcer, meningitis, dysentery and acute gastritis.-Celavex-c, Povidine-iodine, Asl- slidex and Clorox-solution were used as tested antiseptics.-Evaluation were Performed using Gradient plate technique. Results: The study showed that 0.5% Celavex-c and 2% Povidine –iodine were effective more than 5% of Clorox- solution on fungi under investigation. Almost all tested fungi were resistant to Asl- slidex antiseptic in the recommended concentration. Conclusion: It had found that 0.5% Celavex-c, 2% Povidine –iodine and 5% Clorox- solution were effective in killing fungi more than Asl-slidex which showed lesser effect on fungal growth even at high antiseptic concentration.Key Words: Nosocomial Fungi, Opportunistic infection, antiseptic.
